About

Quilting Math serves quilters who want the arithmetic done before they cut. The site offers a Fabric Yardage Calculator, a Quilt Backing Calculator, a Quilt Batting Calculator, a Quilt Binding Calculator, a Quilt Border Calculator, a Half-Square Triangle Calculator, a Fat Quarter & Precut Chart, a Quilt Size Chart and a Quilt Layout Planner. Pages cover Yardage, Blocks, Charts and Planning categories, and the site is aimed at adults planning quilts.

The calculators run entirely in the user's browser. Quilting Math runs arithmetic and writes the PDF in the browser with nothing uploaded, so nothing typed is sent anywhere and the site works on the shop's wi-fi. There is no account, no email address and nothing to sign up for. Quilting Math is a static site built with Astro, hosted on Cloudflare Pages, and it pre-renders every page as HTML. Each calculator loads as a small isolated component only when its page is opened, and the PDF library loads only when Download is clicked.

Quilting Math does not build calculators that would print the same answer for everybody. Users can set usable fabric width, backing overhang, binding strip width and seam allowance as inputs, and the site prints a cutting plan, not just a number. Shareable links keep figures in the URL, and the site stores the user's light or dark theme choice and the last few calculators opened in the browser's local storage. Corrections and requests for new calculators are accepted via the contact page, and questions can be sent to hello@quiltingmath.com.

What we do

  1. Fabric Yardage Calculator

Work out how much fabric to buy, with options for quilting cotton at 40" or 42" usable and wide quilting cotton at 44" usable. Download a PDF or copy a link to the figures.

  2. Quilt Backing Calculator

Plan backing fabric, including turning backing fabric, which can save more than two yards. Set the backing overhang as an input and download a PDF of the result.

  3. Quilt Batting Calculator

Check both orientations of a batting package and print a panel size to check against. The printed chart includes a column for what you measured.

  4. Quilt Binding Calculator

Recalculates for whatever strip width you set and rounds up the bias square to a whole inch. Set binding strip width as an input.

  5. Quilt Border Calculator

Provides a Cut List In The Order You Will Sew Them, and lets you download a PDF.

  6. Half-Square Triangle Calculator

Works out cut = F + 2s + s√2. With a quarter-inch seam the square to cut is finished + 0.854, and a 4-inch finished HST needs 4⅞-inch squares. Download a PDF of the figures.

  7. Fat Quarter & Precut Chart

A printable chart for fat quarters and precuts, checked 2026-09.

  8. Quilt Size Chart

Stores the mattress measurement and asks the user for the drop, with a column for quilting take-up and a Quilt Size Chart That Includes A 16-inch Drop Column For Comparing Two Options Side By Side. Includes throw and baby sizes and a downloadable PDF.
